This is operated by 7 teams, who handle the distribution of the food parcels. These teams are recruited from: St Peter’s, Galashiels; Holy Trinity, Melrose; Our Lady & St Andrew, Roman Catholic Church, Galashiels; Hope Community Church, Tweedbank; Old Parish & St Paul’s, Galashiels; Ecumenical Church, Melrose; St John’s Church of Scotland, Galashiels.
These teams receive referrals from most of the various Social Work departments as well as health care agencies and the CAB. Hence requests should be directed to these agencies.
Over any year an average of 18 parcels a week is distributed. These are mainly for single adults with about 1 in 4 for families.Every year there are two public collections normally at Tesco but a regular amount of food is donated from local congregations and schools. In addition donations of money are received from a variety of individuals and churches. Annually it costs £4,800 to buy the fresh items to be supplied; the various overheads; and for storage facilities. At present the donations of money cover these costs.
Galashiels Food Bank operates all year round and thanks to local folk there are enough provisions, to supply the demand. Rev Duncan McCosh is the co-ordinator for the Food Bank.
