This Food Bank is operated by 7 teams, who handle the distribution of the food parcels. These teams are recruited from: St Peter’s Church, Galashiels; Holy Trinity Church, Melrose; Our Lady & St Andrew, Roman Catholic Church, Galashiels; Hope Community Church, Tweedbank; Old Parish & St Paul’s Church, Galashiels; Ecumenical Church, Melrose; St John’s Church of Scotland, Galashiels.
The teams receive referrals from most of the various Social Work departments as well as health care agencies and the Citizens Advice Bureau. So requests should be directed to these agencies.
Over any year an average of 18 parcels a week is distributed. These are mainly for single adults with about 1 in 4 for families.Every year there are two public collections normally at Tesco but a regular amount of food is donated from local congregations and schools. In addition donations of money are received from a variety of individuals and churches. Annually it costs £4,800 to buy the fresh items to be supplied; the various overheads; and for storage facilities. At present donations of money cover these costs. If you wish make a financial donation, contact the FB treasurer Tom Hogg email@example.com. The Food Bank operates all year round and thanks to local folk there are enough provisions, to supply the demand. If you wish to give non-perishable items, these can be left at any of the team churches listed above.
Rev Duncan McCosh is the co-ordinator for the Food Bank.
